A historic performance by Van Halen turns into a first aid emergency for David Lee Roth, who smashes his nose while baton twirling a mic stand. PT1M2S http://www.smh.com.au/action/externalEmbeddedPlayer?id=d-3tch5 620 349 April 2, 2015 - 12:27PM Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth was left with a bloody nose after a microphone twirling stunt went awry during a historic performance on Hollywood Boulevard. The Rock and Rall Hall of Fame inductee, who was performing with the group for the first time on national television for Jimmy Kimmel Live!, smacked himself in the face while frantically spinning the stand like a drum major in the opening minutes of the show. "Ladies and gentlemen, I cut my nose on the microphone. I apologise," a stoic Roth told the crowd mid-way through the band's first song before he left the stage. Not such a good idea ... Photo: YouTube But the 60-year-old rock legend wasn't going to let a little bit of blood get in the way of a good show. He returned about two and a half minutes later with a bandage across his wound. "F---ed my nose up on the microphone here, so I'm gonna wear the Band-Aid and we're gonna start the whole thing all over for you. We'll give you a little extra for your patience here. Work with us if you will… How do I look? Like f---in' Hiawatha?" he said. Those who were watching the edited broadcast from their living rooms were left clueless about the injury to his face and could only speculate about what had happened to him. At the start of his show the following night, host Jimmy Kimmel said there had been a "good deal of blood". "There's David spinning this thing like a baton...It hits him in the nose, it clips his nose – it actually moves the nose," Kimmel said as a slow motion cip of the incident was screened. "The world of baton-twirling is very dangerous." According to Kimmel, Roth wanted to cover the wound with duct tape but a medic convinced him that a bandage was a better option. "Immediately after the show he went to the hospital, and the doctor put 14 stitches in his nose," Kimmel said. Luckily Roth has time to heal – and to practise his baton-twirling – as the band isn't due to take to tour until July. Follow Entertainment on Twitter
