The Purge: Anarchy is a 2014 American action-horror film directed and written by James DeMonaco. It is the sequel to the 2013 film The Purge and stars Frank Grillo, Carmen Ejogo, Zach Gilford, Kiele Sanchez, Zoë Soul, and Michael K. Williams, while Edwin Hodge reprises his role of Dwayne from the first movie. It was released worldwide on July 18, 2014. The film was met with generally mixed reviews, with most critics agreeing the film was an improvement over the original, and grossed over $110 million. In the 2010s of an alternate reality of the United States of America, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA), which took over following an economic collapse, instituted totalitarian rule, and reinstated themselves as the new government. Using the 28th amendment to The United States Constitution, they established one night a year—сalled "the Purge"—in which all crime is legal and all police, fire, and medical emergency services are shut down for 12 hours, from 7 pm till 7 am. The purge has resulted in crime and unemployment rates plummeting to 1% and a strong economy. Although it was thought to be used as an act of catharsis for the U.S. populace, in reality, it is used as a method of artificial population control, as the people living in poverty and poor areas are usually the main targets. It is March 21, 2023, hours before the annual Purge. While television programs credit the Purge for record low unemployment and poverty levels, people across the country are preparing either to commit acts of violence or to barricade themselves indoors against the mayhem. Meanwhile, an anti-Purge resistance group intermittently hacks into television programs to broadcast their own messages that challenge the system. In Los Angeles, Eva Sanchez, a waitress, rushes home to her daughter Cali and her terminally ill father Papa Rico. As they prepare to lock down for the evening, Papa Rico slips out of the apartment and into a waiting limo. He leaves behind a note explaining that he sold himself to a wealthy family as a Purge offering in exchange for $100,000 which will be transferred to Eva's and Cali's bank accounts following the Purge. A couple named Shane and Liz are driving to the house of Shane's sister to wait out the Purge. They stop at a market but when they return to their car, Shane is startled by a man with white facepaint, whose gang silently taunts them. They quickly drive away, but their car dies just as the Purge begins. They discover that the gang had tampered with their car, and cut the fuel line. The aforementioned gang then shows up, forcing Shane and Liz to flee on foot. At the same time, LAPD sergeant Leo Barnes goes out into the streets heavily armed. Eva and Cali hear a truck pull up in the street and watch as heavily armed paramilitary men spread out into the neighborhood. A drunken maintenance man, who felt slighted by Eva in the past, bursts into their apartment intending to rape them both, but before he can, the paramilitary men enter, kill him, and drag Eva and Cali into the street. Leo drives by and, impressed by their attempts to fight back, rescues them, killing all of the guards and wounding their leader, Big Daddy. When they return to Leo's car, they find Shane and Liz hiding in the back seat. Leo tries to kick them out but must take them all when Big Daddy begins firing at them with a Gatling gun. However, a short time later Leo's car is disabled by the bullets. When Eva promises that she can get him another car at the apartment of her co-worker, Tanya, Leo agrees to take them there on foot in exchange for Tanya's car so he can carry out his purge. During the journey, the five survive intense fights against purgers, and they also notice many dead paramilitary men killed by the anti-Purge resistance. The protagonists finally reach Tanya's seemingly safe apartment with Tanya's family. Eva reveals that there is no car and Leo prepares to leave, but before he can, Tanya's sister shoots Tanya for having an affair with her husband. The group flees. Big Daddy, who has been tracking them through traffic cameras, arrives with more armed guards. Leo and the others manage to slip away only to be captured by the same gang that had been pursuing Liz and Shane. The hired gang delivers them to a theater where upper-class Purgers bid on the right to kill them. After being auctioned off, the five are sent to a purging chamber. The group is able to kill off most of the Purgers, but soon they are outnumbered by the security forces of the elite who kill Shane. Suddenly, numerous and highly organized anti-Purge resistance fighters, led by Carmelo and another man, storm the compound and rescue them, revealing a significant armed revolt. Liz chooses to stay with the resistance fighters to get revenge on the people responsible for Shane's death. Leo, Eva, and Cali take one of the cars in the theater parking lot and leave. Leo finally drives to the house of Warren Grass, the man whom, he reveals, killed his son a year ago while driving under the influence of alcohol. After confronting the man and his wife in their bedroom, Leo leaves the house seemingly purged of his hate. Once outside the house, Leo is shot and wounded by Big Daddy. Big Daddy reveals that the New Founding Fathers believe that the Purge is not killing off enough of the lower class and have been secretly sending out death squads to increase the body count. He informs Leo of the unwritten rule: do not save people. As Big Daddy is about to kill Leo, Warren—who Leo forgave and spared—steps out of his house and shoots Big Daddy, killing him. As Eva, Cali, Warren, and the death squad have a standoff over Leo, the alarm siren sounds to announce that it is 7:00 AM and that the Annual Purge is finished. As a result the other death squad members leave the scene. Warren, Eva and Cali rush to take Leo to the hospital as emergency services rush to clean up the purge.
